Collections bulks with legal and financial material including land deeds, vendor's liens, abstracts of title, surveys and assignments. Of special interest are a Republic of Texas headright landgrant (1837) and a deed of states of Texas (1847).

Confederate soldier, rancher, physician, bank president. Born in 1846 in Tennessee, Abney moved to Texas after the Civil War. Studied medicine in Galveston, Texas, and began his practice in Angelina County. Married Susanna Elizabeth Davis in 1868 and they had three children, Dewitt Fleetwood, Fred, and Edna May.
